4EU+ Alliance: Designing a Transnational Student Portal

Project Date January-October, 2022
Tools Figma, Miro, Usability Testing.
Role in the project PO and UX Designer
Artifacts Prototype

Project Goal

Create a unified digital platform for students and teachers across 8 European universities to access cross-border learning opportunities.

UX Research & Collaborative Discovery

Led a multi-university design initiative using a Design Thinking approach:

  • Comparative Analysis: Audited existing student portals at partner institutions to identify core needs and gaps.
  • Stakeholder Workshops: Facilitated Miro-based workshops with 18 students (Bachelors to PhD) and 8 teachers to map pain points across enrollment phases (before/during/after).

Key insights:

  • PhD students prioritized research collaboration; undergraduates focused on course accessibility.
  • Teachers needed streamlined processes for cross-institutional approvals.

In-Person Synthesis: Hosted a 2-day workshop at Sorbonne University with 24 participants (students, faculty, admins) to:

  • Define user journeys for mobility and course discovery.
  • Co-create wireframes for the homepage and learning opportunity sections.

Iterative Design & Validation

Prototyping:

  • Developed a Figma prototype (with Warsaw’s design team) prioritizing:
    • Customizable filters for learning objectives (e.g., language, credit compatibility).
    • Structured information cards for course details.
    • Admin-friendly workflows for cross-university coordination.

User Testing:

  • Conducted in-person tests at the University of Copenhagen on the high-fidelity prototype, evaluating:
    • Clarity of filters and labels (e.g., "ECTS credits" vs. "local requirements").
    • Information hierarchy on detail pages.
  • Iterated based on feedback (e.g., simplified navigation for mobile users).

Outcome & UX Leadership

Delivered a functional portal unifying access to 8 universities’ resources (launched Dec 2022).

  • Skills Demonstrated:
    • Cross-cultural UX research: Balanced diverse institutional needs.
    • Workshop facilitation: Synthesized input from 50+ stakeholders.
    • Agile prototyping: Translated co-designed wireframes into tested interfaces.
